The game, set in 1274, has a nice haiku-writing mechanic.The Japanese dub calls the blades tachi, a much appropriate term for the period, although the swords depicted in the game are still distinctly katanas. The term katana is certainly ancient, but its usage for a specifical kind of word, as said above, actually came after Muromachi period.The standard sword-wearing practice of Jin's day would have been to wear a single tachi (with a much longer blade-to-grip ratio, much different fittings, and different style of curvature) suspended from the obi, edge down. In fact, it was the Mongol invasion itself that revealed the flaws in Japanese swords that would eventually lead to the katana's development, and those would not see regular use until the Muromachi Period in the 14th century, or become widespread until the Sengoku Period. This practice only came into vogue during the Tokugawa Shogunate, a little under four centuries later. Jin wears a daisho (katana and wakizashi set) tucked into his obi, edges up.Not only is Kuma not a given name, but it means "bear" in Japanese, making it very unusual for a girl's name. One side quest has you looking for a missing girl named Kuma.As Long as It Sounds Foreign: Several character names were changed in the Japanese dub.Furthermore, Lord Shimura blatantly states that the citizens aren't the top priority as he sees them more as an expendable, showing how much the higher classes in Japan disregarded the lower class citizens. Japanese nobles are shown not willing to help the citizens due to lower social class while deluging in the "Samurai code", which proves itself to be ineffective many times. This game purports to show how ugly Japanese higher classes were in terms of politics.Jin has to learn this the hard way in the intro.
The lesson here is that just because it is a tradition and many people are abiding that rule, it isn't always a right thing to follow, especially blindly.

This game constantly discusses Code of Honour.Possibly justified in that foxes are said to be messengers of the god Inari, so these may not be ordinary foxes. In real life, if a wild fox acts that friendly, it's a telltale sign it has rabies and touching it could be the last mistake you even make.
All Animals Are Domesticated: The foxes that lead you to Inari Shrines are extremely affectionate and allow Jin to pet and play with them.
